A Marriage Equality Film: LOVE by Alejandra Duque
Everyone is welcome!
LOVE is a feature documentary which powerfully addresses the most important civil rights issue of the 21st Century, same-sex marriage. In the film, the narration is used to not only assist the flow of factual information but also to offer words of loving wisdom. The narrator begins by reminding us three absolute truths; First, Love is the Source of all creation. Second, Love is the core essence of who we truly are. Third, how Love is expressed in our world is through compassion, kindness, acceptance, and a life lived with grace.
On Election Day 2008, Proposition 8 passed and became law in the state of California and it changed the California Constitution by adding a new section (7.5) to Article 1, which reads, "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” LOVE poignantly illustrates the tremendous impact this law has had on those within the LBGT Community and their families ability to be responsible for and to ultimately provide the same loving care that is automatically offered to those within the heterosexual community. LOVE features never before seen photos, and footage of gay parades, and protest marches as well as hateful disturbing footage of people who oppose same sex marriage. Followed by compelling interviews with same-sex couples authors, scholars, renowned activists and more. The film opens with the sounds of hateful, bigoted slurs. The vicious and cruel sounds are immediately silenced by the narrator defining Love; simultaneously, we see joyful images of LGBT Community. The narrator then defines LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) and some other commonly used words referring to those within the gay community.
The loving examples of the gay couples, their families and friends who remain committed, marks the point of no return for same sex marriage. Regardless of an individual's sexual orientation, religion, race, nationality, or gender, we all share a common desire to love and be loved in return. The cries of the gay community were silenced for too long and this documentary sheds some light on this issue, by showing that Love has no boundaries."
